VMWorld 2017 in Barcelona: Highlights of the Partner Exchange Day.

Following my second time attending VMworld Europe for POST Telecom as a partner company, what did I learn about VMWare’s strategy and vision? What are the trends to come? This time, it’s all about Cloud, Cloud and even more Cloud.

VMWare has finally jumped on the Cloud-Wagon. However, this isn’t just a one Cloud approach. Instead, we’re looking at Multi-cloud and hybrid Cloud. The goal is the seamless management of private and public Clouds. Not only one public Cloud, but the Clouds) of your choice. In addition to the IBM Cloud partnership, VMWare has now embarked upon a strong partnership with AWS, and Clouds with an array of services, including Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service offerings.

During the Partner Exchange General session on Monday, we learned how to best accompany our Customers through Digital Transformation. As technological innovation is reshaping expectations in all industries (whether that’s in Media and Entertainment, Healthcare, Telco, Banking or retail), our Customers face new challenges when engaging in digital transformation. IT now drives the business needs for digital banking, media, telco, health and e-commerce.

It is important for all industries to avoid what VMWare call ‘The Kodak Moment’ – Kodak went bankrupt after missing the digital transformation and falling behind. VMWare’s Vision confirms the future of ICT with any device, any application, any cloud. This is completely in line with POST Telecom’s ICT strategy over the last few years, our goal being to enable Customers to access our services anytime, anywhere and on any device.

I attended the 3 Partner Keynotes:

The Cloud Computing Session

During this session, VMWare presented how partners can deliver a common platform to manage multiple Clouds, allowing Customers to have more freedom and control over their infrastructure and applications at the same time.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions brings together the IBM Bluemix® infrastructure with VMware VSphere, Virtual SAN, NSX and SDDC Manager to easily extend VMware workloads from your on-premises environment to the IBM Cloud.

VMware Cloud Services for AWS is powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, a service which integrates vSphere, vSAN, and NSX along with VMware vCenter management, and is optimised to run on a dedicated, elastic, bare-metal AWS infrastructure.

The Digital Transformation Session

This session highlighted how VMWare Technology can help partners address Customers’ challenges in the face of growing demands and market disruption. A digital-first approach enables organisations to grow and maintain competitiveness in the market. In this growing landscape, how organisations are to make the transition effectively whilst meeting existing business demand is not so clear. This session was all about Mobility and VMWare presented how Workspace ONE can help you in this regard.

Workspace ONE is a digital workspace platform that simply and securely delivers and manages any app on any device by integrating access control, application management, and multi-platform endpoint management. It is available as a cloud service or for on-premises deployment.

The evolution of cybersecurity

The third session was all about Security with a special guest, Keren Elazari, Cyber Security Expert, who gave us a Hacker’s perspective on cyber security and the recent wave of ransomware campaigns and what is still to come. She talked about the disruption of healthcare services which happened recently in the UK and the manipulation of political campaigns as well as the correlation between this event and the bitcoin rate changes over the last year, and whether this was a coincidence or a way to divert the public and media attention.

I will let you decide what to think about this, whilst gently reminding you that a proper Cyber Hygiene is crucial in preventing data breaches. VMWare, through VMworld 2017, has reminded customers of the 5 pillars of cyber hygiene: least privilege, micro-segmentation, encryption, multi-factor authentication and patching.

To match this evolving approach, VMWare App Defense is the new security offering based on the NSX software-defined platform. It is application focused and captures the behavior of the application, using it as a basis to define, using a granular and policy-based approach, the ‘normal’ behavior of a VM, and allowing users to automatically quarantine VMs which fall outside of the established parametre of behaviour.

In short, the 3 priorities at VMworld were cloud, mobility, and security, laying the all-important foundations for digital transformation.
